Noen av planetens mest praktfulle landskap befinner seg i Polarregionene, samtidig som de gir et sjokkerende bilde på klimakrisen. Ultima 2019s åpningskonsert er Lasse Thoresens Lyden av Arktis, et 80 minutter langt multimedia-orkesterverk, inspirert av Thoresens reiser i Svalbard og Finnmarks snødekte landskap. Konserten holdes i Oslo Konserthus, og inkluderer visuelle elementer fra Tromsø Museum og Norsk Polarinstitutt.

Lyden av Arktis byr på overveldende projeksjoner kombinert med Arktisk Filharmonis altoppslukende kraft. Stykket maner på mektig vis frem en del av verden som hittil har vært relativt uberørt, og dets egne historier og myter. Verket byr også på lokale salmer og joik, bekkesilder og fuglesang, kalvende isbreer, samt en knusende finale. Stykket uttrykker ytterlighetene blant skjønnheten og farene som lurer i denne hvite villmarkens vær og terreng.

The polar regions supply some of the planet’s most stunning landscapes, as well as the most startling images of climate crisis. Opening Ultima 2019 at Oslo’s Konserthuset, Lasse Thoresen’s monumental 80 minute multimedia orchestral work Lyden av Arktis (The Sound of the Arctic), written specifically for the Arktisk Filharmoni (Arctic Philharharmonic), is inspired by his travels around the white-out landscapes of Svalbard and Finnmark, and incorporates the visual archives of Tromsø Museum and Norway’s Polar Institute.

Featuring immersive projections as well as the massed forces of the Arktisk Filharmoni, Lyden av Arktis is a powerful evocation of a part of the world that has until now been relatively undisturbed, and is full of its own histories and myths. On the journey you’ll hear integrated local psalms and Sami joiks, babbling brooks and birdsong, calving glaciers and a devastating finale. The piece expresses all the extremes of beauty and danger to be found in the weather and terrain of this white wilderness.
